Sugar

Dear << Test First Name >>,

Welcome!

Insight
Sugar has been around for thousands of years but only in our modern age have we consumed it in such large quantities. Many processed foods contain sugar. You have to be sure to read the label to find out.

Is natural sugar in fruit okay or is it only processed sugar that is the culprit? There are many unanswered questions, and the sugar debates continues. The only thing that is agreed upon is that no one agrees. Some people, for example, claim that sugar causes inflammation, others say not and there are scientific articles that present evidence for both points of view. It’s very confusing even for a scientist. There is also much concern over high-fructose corn syrup as well as many sugar substitutes. A piece of apple pie might not bother us, but when we have it with a soda containing high-fructose corn syrup, it is too much for our small intestine to absorb. Instead, it goes down into the colon where it is fermented by the gut bacteria that produce excess gas. Excess gas often results in abdominal pain and bloating, along with either diarrhea or constipation.

One of the most comprehensive studies on sugar has been done by the American Heart Association, which came to the conclusion that “added sugar” (meaning sugar used as an ingredient in processed and prepared foods, as well as sugar added to foods either at the table or eaten separately) increased risk of developing obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and obesity–related cancers. The study strongly recommends that children consume less sugar as part of a healthier diet. It is recommended by some alternative health experts that we eliminate it completely from our diet.

Ayurveda allows adding sugar to certain foods and sweet is one of the 6 basic tastes. Again, the problem is the quantity of sugar we consume. Taking a short break from sugar can help, or cutting back on the quantity.  If you are having problems, we recommend that you talk to a qualified integrative doctor or a gut expert, get tested, experiment, and biohack to find out what works best for you.

David Lynch—
Sugar does make people happy, but then you fall off the edge after a few minutes, so I’ve really pretty much cut it out of my diet. Except for cupcakes. I like those.

Try to stop eating sugar for several weeks and see how you feel. Then start eating foods with sugar and see how you feel. We talk about this in detail in the Rest and Repair Diet.
